The Meteorology department warned of adverse weather condition with strong winds due to activation of South-west monsoon over Sri Lanka. 
The Meteorology Department requested the fishermen and the naval personnel to be vigilant when venturing into the sea as the seas off the island will be rough. The Department said the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo and Galle will be rough with strong southwesterly wind up to 80kmp/h for the next 24 hours. 





Due to the strong winds along the southern coast, train services along the coastal line have been limited to Hikkaduwa. 
Occasional showers are in the forecast for Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces. Showers may extend to Puttalam and Kurunegala districts too.

The island will experience heavy rains during the next few days

More than 2000 persons from Gampaha, Kandy and Matale districts have been affected by heavy rains during the past two days, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.In Wattala, 2212 persons from 479 families are affected from flash floods while 331 persons are presently housed in temporary shelters. During the last 24 hours, Colombo recorded 70.1 mm rainfall followed by Katunayake with 69.3 mm, Ratmalana with 37.8mm and 22.3 mm in Vavuniya. 

The Meteorology Department states that due to atmospheric disturbances in the vicinity of the country,Meanwhile the Department of Meteorology states many areas in the island will experience heavy rains during the next few days due to a disturbance in the lower atmosphere. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize the damages caused by lightning activities.

Again under flood threat

The Department of Meteorology says that heavy rains with strong winds could be expected in certain areas in the Western, North-Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uuva Provinces.Meanwhile, people in many parts of the country have been severely affected due to the inclement weather conditions. Several families residing in the Addalachchena area in Ampara have been displaced as a result of the heavy rains experienced in the Amapara district. 


The disaster Management centre states that 163 thousand people belonging to 45 thousand 881 families have been distressed due to adverse weather and 272 houses were damaged.

Over 4,000 affected by unfavorable weather

Rains and unfavorable weather play havoc in many parts of the country with landslides and floods.  

The Disaster Management Centre said,that 4432 persons from 1129 families in the five districts of Matale, Kandy, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Badulla have been affected. 9 deaths have also been reported. One person is reported to be missing. 86 houses have been completely destroyed while 495 hoses have been partially destroyed

Many roads have become impassable due to flooding, fall of boulders, landslides and fall of trees. These include Polonnaruwa – Batticaloa road, Polonnaruwa – Manampitiya road, Roads in the Somawathiya area, many roads in the Hill country including Kandy-Mahiyangana road, roads in the Hambantota, Moneragala and Ratnapura districts.   

The Deputy Director for media of the Disaster Management Centre Sarath Lal Kumara said that cooked foods are being provided to the affected people through the district secretaries and assistance in this connection has also been obtained from the Sri Lanka Navy.  He said that President Mahinda Rajapakse is keeping in constant touch with the disaster management centre and guiding them on actions to be taken about the situation.

The island will experience heavy rains during the next few days...

Sri Lanka Disaster Management Centre(DMC) reported that due to heavy rain in the southern and Uva regions several roads were inundated. Wilpita-Akurassa road and Kamburupitiya-Mulatiyana road in the Matara district went under water.

DMC spokesman Mr Pradeep Kodippily said that many roads were also blocked due to earth slips and inundations in Deniyaya-Galle areas.  Nuwara Eliya-Hatton road was closed once again as the earth mounds fell on the road.

Further, due to overflow of Gin ganga, Neluwa- Kosmulla road, Dellawa-Tawalama road and Tawalama-Udugama road inundated at several places in Galle.

The highest rain falls recorded: 

• Deniyaya 141 mm
• sirikandura 55 mm
• Baticaloa 39 mm
• Rathnapura 71 mm

Meanwhile the Department of Meteorology states many areas in the island will experience heavy rains during the next few days  due to a disturbance in the lower atmosphere.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize the damages caused by lightning activities.

Kalani, kalu and ging and Nil-wala rivers approach spill over levels

Under the influence of the cyclonic storm ‘Nilam’, South-western parts of the island ( Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces) are receiving  heavy rainfalls  and it is likely to continue for next 09 hours, The meteorology department said.

However,Department said that the cyclonic storm “Nilam” is moving away from Sri Lanka and there is no direct effect to the weather over the island.

The Disaster Management Centre says that there is a threat of floods, since the Kelani, Kalu, Ging and Nilvalaa rivers have reached spill over level due to the prevalent heavy rain weather condition.

The Disaster Management Centre said further that 72000 persons belonging to 18 thousand 187 families are in distress due to  the inclement weather.

5.8 earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean off Mauritius

An Earthquake of 5.8 magnitude on the Richter scale has been reported off the Indian Ocean. The Tsunami Warning Centre says there is no threat to Sri Lanka.
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit near the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey has reported. The quake was centered at a depth of 20.5 miles.

On Wednesday a 6.4-magnitude quake hit the Aceh province in Indonesia. One man died in a fall as he fled his home, but no other casualties were reported
