The Sri Lankan Rugby Team qualified to the top 5 teams of the Asian 5 Nation Rugby Pool.Sri Lanka handed Kazakhstan a heavy defeat on their way to clinch the Asian Five Nations rugby championship at Havelock sports ground in Colombo.Sri Lanka won the match 49 points to 18.

Sri Lanka scored from six tries, five conversions and three penalties as fullback Reeza Mubarak enjoyed a brilliant day to win the player of the series award. Kazakhstan who laboured for points scored from two tries, a conversion and two penalties. For Sri Lanka winger Sandun Herath, lock Shenal Dias, centre Pradeep Liyanage, prop Sathya Ranatunga, fly half Fazil Marija and winger Chamara Dabare scored a try each while Mubarak scored 19 points from his boot by putting over five conversions and three penalties. For Kazakhstan fly half Daulet Akymbekov and centre Alexander Zolotukhin scored a try each while fullback Maxim Lifontov put over two penalties and a try.

Sri Lanka defeated Thailand 45-07 in the Asian 5 Nations Division 1 rugby tournament held at the Havelock Park Grounds, Colombo and secured vital bonus points.Sri Lanka’s 45 points include 6 tries, 3 Conversions and 3 Penalties while Thailand managed only one Try and a Conversion. 

Sandun Herath and Pradeep Liyanage scored two tries each for Sri Lanka. Chamara Dabare and Gayan Weerakoon too added to the Lankan total scoring a try each.

Third leg of the Asian Grand Prix

With the Tamil Nadu government refusing to host Sri Lankan athletes on political grounds, the third leg of the Asian Grand Prix scheduled to be held in Chennai on May 16 has now been shifted to Colombo,Sri Lanka.
After the Tamil Nadu Government cancelled the prestigious Asian athletics championship scheduled to be held in Chennai from 3-7 July, the Asian Athletics Association has decided to hold the third leg of the Asian GP in Colombo on May 12.

On February 21, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa called off the championship, saying that Lankan athletes have no place in the state, after reports of the alleged brutal killing of slain LTTE chief V Prabhakaran`s son came out.

However, the Athletics Federation of India is still hopeful about find an alternate venue in the country.

The first two legs of the Asian GP would be held as scheduled earlier on May 5 in Bangkok and on May 8 at Chonburi in Thailand.

The events for this year`s series will be: Men: 100m, 400m, 5000m/3000m/5000m, 110m Hurdles, 4x100m Relay; Triple Jump, High Jump, Shot Put, Javelin Throw

Women: 100m, 400m, 800m, 100m Hurdles, 4x100m Relay, Long Jump, High Jump, Discus Throw, Javelin Throw

Uganda International Badminton Open Championships 2013

Sri Lanka's player Dinuka Karunaratne won the men's single title at  the 2013 Uganda International Badminton Open Championships,held at Kampala, over the weekend.

Dinuka is the younger brother of Niluka Karunaratne, who represented Sri Lanka in the London Olympics. Dinuka Karunaratne beat his Indian rival, Sabanka Deshi by 2-0 in the final. Karunaratne beat Italian, Gracio, in the semi-final by 2-0 to get through to the final.

"This is a great win because we are making sure this title goes to Sri Lanka again after my brother won it last year. I have liked the tournament because it has been very competitive and beating an Indian in the tournament is even so sweet because they are a big badminton playing nation in Asia," a happy Karunaratre said.

Former Sri Lanka netball captain Lakshmi Victoria was elected as president of the Netball Federation 2013 its Annual General Meeting which was held at Sports Ministry premises.She beat former president Trixie Nanayakkara to the post.Victoria received 26 votes while Nanayakkara received only eight votes.two clubs abstained from voting.
Shyama Cooray received 25 votes to be elected as the Secretary while Champa Alwis withdrew from the post of event secretary when she was uncontested.Yasmin Dharmaratne was elected deputy president and Sudharma Jayaardena deputy secretary.

Defending national billiard champion K.H. Sirisoma of  Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) made history by clinching National Billiards title for the 21st time, beating S.H.M. Aslam of Moors Sports Club six sets to three in the final of the 60th Annual Billiards Championship conducted by Billiards and Snooker Association of Sri Lanka at the Sugathadasa Sports Complex.

The game was evenly poised with both Sirisoma and Aslam competing well, but Sirisoma won the fifth, sixth and seventh sets in row to get into a commanding position. Sirisoma led five sets to two at that stage. Then Aslam won the eighth set 101-90 to reduce the gap five sets to three but Sirisoma bounced back and won the next set 101-33 to record a win in the national championship for the 21st time.

After two successful seasons since its launch in 2011, the UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) enters 2013 with an exciting calendar, touring all five continents. Besides classic venues such as Italy, Belgium and France, the new world giants of Australia, Brazil and the USA among many other exciting destinations, the series is now ready to welcome its first Asian event. The exotic landscape of Sri Lanka is our first stop next year, with a Road Race and a Time Trial in the surrounding of the country’s former capital, Colombo. The month of April seems to be inviting to warm, coastal destinations. After Sri Lanka, the UWCT has a stop in the glamorous hills of Saint Tropez, France, in Perth, Australia and then in Chania, on the Greek Island of Crete.

In May we move on to the state of New York, in the USA to get the season started in North America. UCI Bike City Copenhagen expects the Scandinavian crowd and other visitors for their Road Race and Time Trial. Belgium also hosts their qualifier event in May.

In June it’s time for Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, to show why they have recently been awarded as host city of the 2014 UWCT Final. Their classic style road race is one of the biggest and most traditional in the series, with the city centre fully closed for cyclists. Then we move north to the rolling mountains of Austria, to St. Polten in the Vienna surroundings.

In July the UWCT takes us to a rehearsal of the most challenging UWCT Final ever. The Qualifier event in Trento, Italy, will feature most of the climbs and landscape of this season’s Final. In August and September, Brazil and Spain close the opportunities for riders to qualify to a legendary Final.

The town of Trento is so proud to be hosting the 2013 Road Masters World Championships (UWCT Final) that it will be hard not to feel already a World Champion once you get there. The rainbow colors will be everywhere and the top of the famous Giro d’ Italia climb, Monte Bondone itself, will be standing like a podium for the ones who reach its top on the road race.

Maldives Under 23 team has won the Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa International Football Tournament after beating Pakistan Under 23 team by 2 – 1 in the finals at the Jayathilaka Stadium in Nawalapitiya (Sri Lanka). 

The Mahinda Rajapaksa International Soccer Tournament-2012 was organized by the Minister of Sports and the Football Federation of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh at Mahinda Rajapaksa Football Trophy

Sri Lanka under 23 soccer team won their second match against Bangladesh and kept their chances alive in qualifying for the finals of the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Soccer Tournament-2012 organized by the Minister of Sports and the Football Federation of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka played against Bangladesh with hopes of survive in the series.
The match was well balanced between both teams at the first half of the game, none of teams were able to score a goal. Eranda Prasad delivered a goal at 71st minute of the match and it was the only goal scored during the match.

Sri Lanka failed to start with a win at the opening day of the tournament against Maldives. Sri Lanka lost their game 3-0 . Pakistan won the second game of the commencing day by 1-0 against Bangladesh.

Maldives Under 23 team defeated Sri Lanka by 3-0 in the opening match of the Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa International Football Tournament.

The matches are played at newly constructed Jayathilake Stadium, Nawalapitiya in Sri Lanka

Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by one goal to nil in their first match of the H.E. Mahinda Rajapaksa International Football Tournament.

Sri Lanka will take on Bangladesh on 5th december 2012 at 1600hrs Sri Lankan time.

The final of the competition will be played Sunday (9) at 1600hrs Sri Lankan time at the Jayathilleke Stadium in Nawalapitiya.

Pakistan U23 football team will leave for Sri Lanka(01/12/12) to take part in Mahinda Rajapaksa International Football Tournament to be held from December 3 to 9 at Nawalapitiya, Jayathilaka Stadium.
Pakistan, Maldives, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the four nations that will play the football tournament for Mahinda Rajapaksa International Football Trophy. There will be two matches every other day commencing from December 3 where Sri Lanka will play against Maldives in the opening match.“The participation in the event will help our team to prepare for South Asian Games likely to be held in September, 2013,” said Pakistan Football Federation president Faysal Saleh Hayat here on Friday. He also wished the team good luck and expressed the optimism that the team would produce desired results in the event.

Sri Lanka Rugby Sevens(7) team beat Malaysia to win Plate championship at HSBC Asian Series Mumbai 7s.

Sri Lanka beat Malaysia by 22-17 at the Gymkhana Club in Mumbai.The Full time of plate finals end as 17-17,in extra time Sri Lanka managed seal the game through a try.
Sri Lanka Srinath Sooriyabandara scored two tries while Nigel Ratwatte and Suhiru Anthony scored a try each.


Sri Lanka earlier beat Phillipines by 31-19 to enter Plate Finals.




Sri Lanka were able to win Bowl Championship at Borneo Sevens as the first leg of Asian Rugby 7s series and continue their form at China by winning Plate championship at Shanghai 7s.

There is no glitzy opening ceremony, no film stars no musicconcert, no fireworks  for the opening of World Twenty20 in Hambantota,Sri Lanka.

Tournament is likely to be mix of Robin Round and Knockout. This will be the first T20 cricket World Cup tournament held in an Asian country, the last three being held in South Africa, England and the West Indies respectively.

The Tournament starts a three-week cricket fiesta involving 12 teams in coastal Hambantota, hill town Pallekele and the capital Colombo,SriLanka, where the fourth World Twenty20 champions will be crowned on October 7 2012.

Sri Lanka`s  Kumar Sangakkara has won three awards, including the prestigious Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year at the annual ICC awards ceremony in Colombo,Sri Lanka. Sangakkara also won the People's Choice prize, an honour he had received last year as well.
Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena has won the David Shepherd trophy for the Umpire of the Year at the ICC Awards ceremony in Colombo,Sri Lanka. It is the first time he has won this award.

During the period under consideration, Kohli played 31 ODIs and scored 1733 runs at an average of 66.65, including eight hundreds and six half-centuries.Kohli was part of India’s World Cup winning team and is now an integral part of the team set-up.

Women's cricket had two prizes for the first time, with the ICC awarding the ODI Cricketer and T20I Cricketer of the Year, instead of awarding a single honour. Last year's winner West Indies' Stafanie Taylor won the ODI gong, while England's Sarah Taylor took the T20 award.

Pradeep Sanjaya won the first ever medal for Sri Lanka at the Paralympics by winning the Bronze medal in the Men’s 400m T46 event at the London Paralympic 2012.

Gunther Matzinger of  Austria won the gold medal with a timing of 48.45 while Yohansson Nascimento of Brazil taking the silver with a timing of 49.21.     

Pradeep Sanjaya end the event with timing of 49.28 seconds and it was read as a new Regional record.
